Why motorcycle fitment data is unreliable everywhere

The aftermarket has an industry standard for fitment. It still produces contradictory answers, and the reasons are structural rather than careless.

If you have ever had three retailers disagree about whether a part fits your motorcycle, you have run into a problem that is much older and much more structural than any one shop being careless.

Start with a comparison. Building a computer is a solved problem, and PCPartPicker works because it can be solved: a PC has roughly ten standardised interfaces. A CPU socket is a published specification. RAM is a generation. A power supply is a wattage and a connector. Those facts are machine-readable, agreed across the whole industry, and rarely ambiguous.

Motorcycles have nothing equivalent. Fitment is specific to model, year, variant, and market, and there is no universal published standard that every manufacturer and retailer encodes the same way. The same bike is a YZF-R9 in one catalogue and an R9 in another. A part that fits the 2015 to 2017 model may or may not fit a mid-2017 revision, and whether a catalogue records that distinction is up to whoever typed it in.

The industry is not unaware of this. The Aftermarket Catalog Exchange Standard, known as ACES and managed by the Auto Care Association, is the standard the aftermarket uses to communicate fitment, and it does cover powersports — motorcycles sit in the same vehicle configuration database as cars and light trucks. What is striking is that the standard's own documentation describes exactly the failure modes riders experience. Fitment records that are too broad or too narrow. Missing qualifiers that make a part appear compatible when it is not. And gaps common enough that the industry has a name for them: application holes, or "app holes" — vehicles a part actually fits that its catalogue never lists.

So the disagreement between retailers is usually not one of them being wrong and the others right. It is several catalogues, built from the same imperfect source data at different times, with different qualifiers preserved or dropped along the way.

This is why this site labels its confidence instead of presenting fitment as settled fact, and why it records "not compatible" as a real answer rather than leaving a blank. It is also why the honest instruction is always the same: use fitment data to narrow the field, then confirm with the manufacturer before you spend money.

Anyone claiming a complete and perfect motorcycle compatibility database is describing something that does not currently exist.
