What was your first mod, and was it the right one?

Everyone's first mod says something about why they ride. Frame sliders because you're scared of dropping it, levers because the stock ones don't fit your hands, a tail tidy because the stock fender is enormous. What did you do first, what did it cost, and looking back - was that the right place to start, or would you spend that money elsewhere now?
