How do you check fitment before buying?

Before this site existed, the process was roughly: retailer dropdown, a forum search, then a manufacturer PDF that contradicts both. What's your actual routine? Do you trust retailer fitment filters? Call the manufacturer? Just measure and hope? Genuinely asking - if there's a step we should build into the site, this is where I'd hear it.
